Knee oteoarthritis in the US population is currently estimated at 10.9 million and is expected to reach 13.5 million people by the year 2000. Knee osteoarthritis pain has been related to poor physical and social function and has had a direct effect on perceived health and health related quality of life. Visco-supplementation injections are an important therapy for osteoarthritic knee pain. Visco-supplementation is a non-systemic therapy for OA knee pain relief by replacing diseased osteoarthritis synovial fluid reducing pain, which may improve knee function. Visco-supplementation has been shown to reduce the use of chronic, systemic pain medications such as NSAIDs and Cox-2 inhibitors.
